The best bang-for-your-buck goalie duos in the NHL

We've ranked the NHL's best goalie duos, and listed them by cap hit. When you combine the two you get this list of the league's best goaltending values.

In our annual People of Power and Influence issue, on sale now, we scoured the NHL’s goaltending menus for the best value meals.

Or, in other words, we made a list of the best bang-for-your-buck goalie duos in the league.

How did we make the list? By Frankenstein-ing previous lists from the Goalie Issue, in which we ranked the league’s best goaltending tandems, with a separate list in which the tandems were ranked based on cap-hit.

The Canadiens’ duo of Carey Price and Al Montoya was our No. 1-ranked best tandem, but they also had the ninth highest cap hit of any pair in the league. As a result, Montreal was given one point for being first in the rankings and 22 points for being 22nd in terms of cap hit. That adds up to 23 points, good for ninth place on the bang-for-your-buck list.

Or, to put it in terms that I better understand -- food -- Montreal is like the Whole Foods of value. The product is delicious and will make you feel better than most other options out there, but you have to pay for that higher quality.

The Sabres, on the other hand, is the Burger King of our list. Two dollars for a pack of chicken nuggets is as cheap as it gets, but is it worth the risk? Robin Lehner and Anders Nilsson cost a combined $3.25 million, but wouldn’t you feel a lot safer if you had just spent a few more dollars and gotten yourself a James Reimer? You could have even just bought a couple new ingredients and spiced up those leftovers (Chad Johnson) you had lying around.

I think you get the point. So without further adieu, here is the official THN bang-for-your-buck goaltending rankings for all 30 teams. It should be noted that the tandem rankings are season-long projections and didn’t take the start of the 2016-17 season into account.
