The Jean Beliveau Award of Distinction

Re: Jason Kay’s column about the Lady Byng Trophy. Who exudes more class in the hockey world than Jean Beliveau?

The Quebec League gives the Beliveau Award to its scoring champion, but the NHL could truly enshrine his noble image in a makeover of the Byng.

Re-name it the Jean Beliveau Award of Distinction or the Beliveau-Byng Trophy if you want to preserve the Byng legacy.

In any case, Beliveau has always and will always represent the benchmark for skill combined with sportsmanship, class and fair play in a game that too often drops its standards to accommodate the lowest common denominator.

As the personification of hockey royalty, Beliveau has no peer.
