Up yours, 2008.
• Last Wednesday, The Hockey News conducted its annual fantasy draft for the NHL’s upcoming regular season. And for once, Lady Luck lifted her restraining order on me long enough for the No. 1 pick to finally land in my deserving hands.
Eschewing conventional wisdom as I am wont to do, I lobbed a giant “pshaw” in the direction of the Sidney Crosby fanatics in the room and instead took Capitals mind-blower Alex Ovechkin first overall. As GMs say following every pick they make during the NHL’s entry draft, “I was surprised and overjoyed Ovechkin was still available.”
Shockingly and elatingly, I was equally shocked and elated with each of the following guaranteed* point producers available when I chose them in this order:
Steven Stamkos (Tampa Bay)
Scott Gomez (Rangers)
Alex Kovalev (Montreal)
Mike Green (Washington)
Brian Campbell (Chicago)
Martin Havlat (Chicago)
Markus Naslund (Rangers)
Viktor Kozlov (Washington)
Sean Avery (Dallas)
Sergei Fedorov (Washington)
Keith Ballard (Florida)
Thanks in advance to my fellow THN staffers for their hard-earned moolah.
