United States completes humiliating tournament with loss to Czech Republic

The Czech Republic defeated Team USA 4-3 in the final round-robin game, leaving the Americans winless and entrenched firmly in last place in Group A.

Team USA came into the World Cup of Hockey with its sights set firmly on defeating Canada. It left the tournament with its sights set firmly on getting out of Dodge as quickly as possible and trying to put the whole miserable experience behind it.

USA’s humiliation was completed Thursday night when it dropped a 4-3 game to the Czech Republic, a loss that left it firmly entrenched in last place in Group A of the tournament. The stench was just slightly lessened by the fact that Finland lost 3-0 to Russia earlier in the day to finish last overall in the tournament. Finland lost all three of its games and finished the tournament with a minus-8 goals differential. USA also lost all three of its games and finished minus-6.

The Czechs, meanwhile, managed to get out of the tournament with a respectable three points, not good enough to usurp either Canada or Team Europe in Group A, but it was a better result than a lot of observers expected to see. The Czechs were led in the game by the Michalek brothers – Milan of the Toronto Maple Leafs and Zbynek of the Arizona Coyotes. Milan scored twice for the Czechs, while Zybnek contributed a single goal.

It was a disastrous tournament for both teams in the tournament, but it might have been an all-time low for USA Hockey. The Americans got goals from Joe Pavelski, Justin Abdelkader and Ryan McDonagh and managed to score just five goals in three games in the tournament.
