UQTR Patriotes Win Men's Canadian U SPORTS Championship
What a game, what a night.
The Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières came out victorious to win the men's U SPORTS championship on Sunday, defeating the Alberta Golden Bears in a 5-4 double-overtime victory in Nova Scotia.
The game was far from easy for the Patriotes. Alberta took a 2-1 lead in the first and Noah Philip made it 3-1 just 45 seconds into the third. Felix Lauzon scored to cut the lead to 3-2, but Philip's goal at 31:46 made life miserable for UQTR.
But a two-goal third period forced overtime, and they definitely needed as much time as they could get. After netting the tying goal, Simon Lafrance's double-overtime marker sealed the deal for UQTR's first title since 2003.
The Patriotes finished the season with a 19-3-2 record.
Former NHL prospect Alexis Gravel came up huge for UQTR, stopping 66 of 70 shots in the five-period affair.
StFX won the bronze medal game with a 3-2 victory over Ryerson earlier in the day.
