Optimism abounds in Colorado. Not only do the Avalanche have a new coach in Patrick Roy, they also have the No. 1 pick from the 2013 draft, Nathan MacKinnon.

MacKinnon is coming off a Memorial Cup-winning season with the Halifax Mooseheads and while he still has major junior eligibility, it is likely he will be part of the Avs this season - and for many seasons to come.

THN’s Ryan Kennedy caught up with the budding star at the NHLPA Rookie Showcase to discuss his off-season training, learning from Matt Duchene, and more.
