VIDEO: One-on-one with Kitchener Rangers right winger, NHL prospect Tobias Rieder
Kitchener Rangers coach and GM Steve Spott always has an eye out for new talent when he is coaching for Canada on the international stage. In 2009, Spott noticed a young Swede named Gabriel Landeskog at the world under-18s in Fargo, N.D., and Spott knew instantly he wanted him as a Ranger.
At the very same tournament Spott got his first glimpse of German right winger Tobias Rieder and again he was impressed. Spott was so enamored by Rieder that he used the fifth pick in the Canadian League import draft to bring the young man to Kitchener.
In Rieder’s rookie season in the Ontario League, the 5-foot-11, 173-pounder scored 23 goals and totaled 49 points in 65 games for the Rangers and once again has scouts talking about his potential at the next level.
THN’s Ryan Kennedy caught up with Rieder as he prepared for the next step in his career, the NHL Entry Draft in Minnesota.
