WASHINGTON - The Washington Capitals have added an offensive defenceman by acquiring Dennis Wideman from the Florida Panthers for a third-round pick in 2011 and prospect Jake Hauswirth.

Wideman joins his fourth NHL team.

He had nine goals and 33 points in 61 games for the Panthers this season.

In 439 career NHL games with the Bruins, Blues and Panthers, Wideman has 55 goals and 198 points.

The Capitals are currently missing defenceman Mike Green from their lineup after he took a puck to the face.

Hauswirth signed with Washington as a free agent in May 2009.
