Watch Jordie Benn and Alex Chiasson put on a passing clinic

Jordie Benn and Alex Chiasson aren’t two players you’d expect to consider trick shot artists. Tuesday night, though, Benn made an incredible three-zone saucer pass to brother Jamie and Chiasson followed suit with a perfect breakaway bank pass to Jean-Gabriel Pageau. These are two of the greatest assists we’ll see all season.

Monday night, Los Angeles’ Anze Kopitar made a gorgeous alley-oop pass to Marian Gaborik. It wouldn’t have been surprising were that one of the greatest assists of the season. But then Tuesday night’s tilt between the Dallas Stars and Ottawa Senators happened.

First, we’ll start with Dallas’ Jordie Benn. He must have been checking out Kopitar’s highlights pre-game, because with the Stars down 5-1 with little less than 14 minutes remaining in the third, Benn took a page from Kopitar’s book and put what can best be compared to a Hail Mary in football right on the tape of Jamie Benn, his brother:

Jordie’s pass lands flat and one hops right on Jamie’s stick. If you gave the brothers 10 attempts at this play, connecting as perfectly as they did Tuesday might happen once, maybe twice, but no more than that. The risk was mitigated because the Stars were on a penalty kill, so if the pass was incomplete, Dallas wouldn’t have been hit with an icing. Even still, for the Benns to link up so smoothly right in the middle of a contest is remarkable, and Jamie had a perfect finish to bump the Stars one goal closer.

Less than two minutes after Benn scored, Tyler Seguin buried a goal to pull the Stars even closer. But less than two minutes after Seguin made the score 5-3 for the Senators, Ottawa winger Alex Chiasson helped stretch the lead back to three goals with a remarkable bank-pass to Jean-Gabriel Pageau for a breakaway tally (via SomeHockeyVideos):

That’s the rarely seen two-zone directional feed. It would have been one thing had Pageau skated to the left wing boards which Chiasson banked the puck off of, but Pageau was able to stay on course up the middle of the ice to accept the puck. Like the Benn to Benn pass, give Chiasson and Pageau 10 attempts and you’re unlikely to see this happen as smoothly as it did Tuesday night.

But which was the better pass? Was the Benn to Benn three-zone saucer pass better than Chiasson’s pinpoint-accurate bank shot? Let us know which you prefer.
