Watch Marek Zidlicky send Tom Wilson sailing with huge hip check

Sure, Marek Zidlicky was called for clipping on the play, but his hip check on Tom Wilson is a must-see hip check. Wilson is five inches taller and 20 pounds heavier than Zidlicky, yet he still managed to send the Washington Capitals winger flipping through the air.

Yes, Detroit Red Wings defenseman Marek Zidlicky got whistled for clipping on this hip check. And yes, the legality of the hit can certainly be questioned. What can’t be questioned, however, is that Zidlicky’s hit sent Washington Capitals winger Tom Wilson for a pretty good ride.

With Washington leading 2-0, Wilson went to chip the puck into the Detroit end and give chase. Just one quick second after flipping the puck into the attacking zone, however, Wilson was met by the hip of Zidlicky, who lowered his body and sent Wilson flipping forward and crashing to the ice.

The hit, which came midway through the second period of Detroit’s 2-1 loss to Washington Sunday afternoon, is just another example of what Zidlicky has brought to the Red Wings blueline since coming over from the New Jersey Devils at the trade deadline.

In 18 games with the Red Wings since the deadline, Zidlicky has registered three goals and 10 points while averaging over 18 minutes per game. Detroit had long been reported to be chasing after a right-handed defenseman for their blueline and the acquisition of Zidlicky has been tremendous.

Though the Red Wings lost their fourth contest in five games, they still remain in the thick of the playoff hunt with two games against the Carolina Hurricanes and one against the Montreal Canadiens remaining on the schedule.
