Watch Martin Jones rob Alex Galchenyuk with brilliant, windmilling glove stop

Martin Jones has been stellar in his second season as a Shark, and the San Jose netminder out-duelled Montreal’s Carey Price Friday night with a massive glove save in the first period helping make the difference.

The San Jose Sharks find themselves atop the Pacific Division, and that’s no doubt thanks in part to the stellar goaltending the club has gotten from Martin Jones to this point in the campaign. And in a duel between Jones and potential league MVP Carey Price, the Sharks netminder showed exactly the type of difference he can make.

Midway through the first period between the Sharks and Canadiens, Jones found himself in a tough spot with Montreal controlling the play behind the San Jose goal and swarming the net. A shot out front resulted in a scramble out front which allowed Canadiens winger Paul Byron to locate the puck and spin a backhanded pass over to Alex Galchenyuk, who had a ton of room to operate.

However, with Jones seemingly down and out, Galchenyuk took the extra second to settle the puck before wiring it on goal, and that was just enough time for Jones to dart over, strike out with his glove and rob the Canadiens center:

Jones’ save was one of 31 he made on the night in what was a first-star worthy performance as the Sharks defeated the Canadiens’ 2-1, and it was easily the best stop by either goaltender in what was a certifiable goaltending duel.

With the win, Jones now moves into a tie with Price and Columbus’ Sergei Bobrovsky for the league lead in wins with 13 and in fifth place with a 1.99 goals-against average.
