Watch NHL top prospects try their hand at figure skating

Canucks winger Jake Virtanen and Ducks defenseman Shea Theodore are likely to have some heated battles throughout their career, but for one day only they were figure skating partners. Watch as Virtanen, Theodore and other top prospects take the ice and try to learn some new moves.

The CBC show Battle of the Blades took retired NHL players, paired them with figure skaters and had the duos battle it out, Dancing with the Stars style, for prize money. The show lasted four seasons before being cancelled in 2013, but if ever CBC wants to bring it back, maybe they can take a page from Upper Deck’s book and use rookie talent.

In a video released by the trading card company, several top NHL prospects took the ice and attempted to be the best Elvis Stojkos they could be. The best part of the video is that all the players — which includes Jake Virtanen, Shea Theodore and Travis Sanheim, to name a few — seem willing to have fun and not take themselves too seriously.

It’s hard to say any of the players have a future in figure skating, but New Jersey Devils prospect John Quenneville shows he might be willing to give pairs a shot:

All of the best moves come early in the video, but Theodore’s spin with Virtanen watching on might be the highlight. Virtanen’s laugh while watching the Ducks defenseman spinning in place as gracefully as he can is hilarious, and that Virtanen follows it up with a spin of his own makes it that much better.

It’s hard not to give New York Rangers netminder MacKenzie Skapski some props, too, for stringing together some jumps and drawing a few laughs from the figure skaters instructing the group. But Montreal Canadiens goaltender Zach Fucale, well, he knows where his ceiling. Stick to hockey? You bet. Safe bet says the same goes for the rest of the rookies who took part.
