A WHL assistant coach will be suspended to start the regular season in September.
The WHL announced that Carter Rigby, an assistant coach of the Prince George Cougars, has been suspended for three games.
According to the major junior league, Rigby violated the WHL's standards of conduct, "specifically pertaining to the use of insensitive language."
"The WHL and Prince George Cougars are committed to holding players and staff to the highest standards of conduct both on and off the ice," the league said in a news release.
The league did not provide details of the insensitive language and said it will have no further comment at this time.
In a statement, the Cougars said Rigby regrets the incident and agreed to participate in supplemental sensitivity training, which will be "over and above the WHL's mandatory Respect in Hockey education programming for all staff, players and personnel associated with the league."
All participants associated with the WHL, including players, team staff, management, ownership, league staff and officials, must comply with the league's standards of conduct at all times, whether on or off the ice.
Rigby joined Prince George as an assistant coach in 2022-23. The 30-year-old also played for the Cougars briefly in the 2009-10 and 2010-11 seasons before spending parts of four seasons with the Kelowna Rockets.
The Cougars finished first in the Western Conference last season with a 49-15-1-3 record for 102 points, and they made it to the Conference finals before losing to the Portland Winterhawks.
