Why the extra point in the shootout?

Why are teams awarded a point for losing in a shootout?

I understand giving the consolation point for an overtime loss, but does the league really need to encourage teams to score in a shootout? That's kind of the point.

I suggest we take the shootout consolation point away to discourage teams from taking it that far.

If the league wants to end games in this fashion, let's at least have them send the message they would prefer for it to be settled in a traditional way, with other teammates on the ice in overtime.
