Here’s something you don’t hear every day. Minnesota Wild coach Mike Yeo lost it on his team during practice, left the ice, and didn’t return, leaving his assistant coaches to complete the practice with the team.

According to the Minnesota Star Tribune’s Michael Russo it began when Yeo put a halt to practice and started yelling at the team. It continued when he slammed his stick in the middle of a scrum and laid into the team more. And finally, it all came to a head when Yeo left the ice, but not before smashing his stick off the glass in frustration.

After practice, Yeo spoke to media about what went down and the reasons for his frustration.

The outburst comes a day after the Wild lost in overtime to the San Jose Sharks by a score of 4-3. Members of the Wild also addressed the situation, and every player that spoke to Russo said they probably deserved what they got.

When you think about coaches that might be ready to lose their cool, Yeo doesn’t really come to mind. Maybe Buffalo’s Ted Nolan, or Carolina’s Bill Peters. Even Boston bench boss Claude Julien would make a good case.

But it’s been that kind of year for the Wild. They’ve been outstanding in almost every facet of the game, but haven’t been able to come away with wins. Minnesota’s goaltending has been less than stellar, and, as a team, they’re flaming out of the race for a wild card spot in the West.

Minnesota will get a chance to show if Yeo’s message got across on Thursday night when they host the Chicago Blackhawks.
