The Buffalo Sabres were in a state of trade paralysis in this off-season -- at least, until Wednesday night's blockbuster deal that sent winger J.J. Peterka to the Utah Mammoth in return for up-and-coming winger Josh Doan and defenseman Michael Kesserling.
Peterka immediately agreed to a five-year, $38.5 million contract extension -- and one that all but confirms he didn't want to be in Buffalo. Sabres GM Kevyn Adams will have to explain to media and fans why he couldn't get Peterka to sign a similar contract to stay in Buffalo. And Adams will have to spend the money he's freed up in this trade on veteran players. Otherwise, Wednesday's trade will be seen as a money grab.
