2023 leading scorer returns after missing three weeks with hand injury

The Buffalo Sabres provided an update on the health of some players prior to their game against the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday. The morning skate at Key Bank Center revealed a few surprises, including forward Tage Thompson being a full participant.

Thompson, who suffered a hand injury in a 5-2 loss to the Boston Bruins on November 14, took the spot of injured winger Alex Tuch on the top line with Jeff Skinner and Casey Mittelstadt and indicated that he will be in the lineup.

“If (Alex) didn’t get hurt, today would’ve been a good timeline for me,” Thompson said. “Obviously (I’m) ahead of schedule, but it feels good. There’s been no issues and obviously, I got it cleared medically, so, I mean, it’s kind of just up to me now.”

Tuch suffered a hamstring injury in the 2-1 loss to Nashville on Sunday and head coach Don Granato indicated that he would be out seven-to-10 days. Winger Jordan Greenway suffered an upper-body injury in Carolina on Saturday and he will likely be out seven-to-10 days as well.

Another surprising sight on Tuesday was recently retired goalie Craig Anderson in the opposition net at the morning skate instead of Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen. Granato said that Luukkonen was ill and not able to backup starter Eric Comrie on Tuesday, which required Devon Levi to be recalled by the club on an emergency basis.

Defenseman Rasmus Dahlin left the ice midway through the skate, but Granato said he expects the blueliner to play against the Wings.
