The Buffalo Sabres have been actively working on signing a pair of pending free agent wingers to contract extensions. On Wednesday, Pierre LeBrun of the Athletic reported that the club and forward Jordan Greenway have agreed on a two-year contract extension worth $8 million ($4 million AAV).
The 28-year-old has eight points (3 goals, 5 assists) in 26 games this season, after missing almost two months with a mid-body injury that required surgery. In his seventh NHL season, Greenway has established himself as an excellent two-way forward and penalty killer and is a big body in a Buffalo lineup short on size.
Greenway's career-high of 12 goals kept the Canton, NY native's salary demand from the Sabres just slightly more than his current $3 million cap hit, but the deal came down to his willingness to stay in Buffalo.
Both winger Jason Zucker and defenseman Henri Jokiharju were scratched for the Sabres' fourth straight loss to the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday. There has been no news on progress on a new deal with Zucker, who has 44 points (18 goals, 26 assists) in 54 games. The expectation is that Jokiharju will be moved sometime before 3 p.m. Friday.
