The Buffalo Sabres split back-to-back games to close out 2023, beating the Columbus Blue Jackets 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, and followed that up with a 5-1 loss in Ottawa on New Year’s Eve. In both contests, Buffalo registered over 40 shots, but they could not convert the high volume of chances into goals.
The Sabres practiced at Key Bank Center on Tuesday after a day off and head coach Don Granato was on the ice after missing the weekend due to illness. Rochester Americans head coach Seth Appert subbed in for Granato behind the bench against Columbus and Ottawa.
"You're dealing with an illness and that can take you out of it for a bit, which it did," Granato said on Tuesday. "Seth and I have been close for years. We've run teams very similar and we talk a lot through the season. We talk a lot at training camp. Even in camp, a lot of the head coaching responsibilities, I would delegate to Seth when he's here. So it's just natural."
The club on Sunday made the long-awaited roster move, placing goalie Eric Comrie on waivers. The veteran netminder cleared on Monday and was sent to the Rochester Americans of the AHL. Comrie is expected to get significant playing time down with the Amerks, which is something that he would not get with Devon Levi and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen splitting duties in December.
