If the Oilers walk away from the Philip Broberg offer sheet, is there a play where Edmonton and Calgary make a huge trade?

Elliotte Friedman took some time to talk about the offer sheets tendered to the Edmonton Oilers from the St. Louis Blues this week on the 32 Thoughts podcast. Among the suggested alternatives for the Oilers was a trade with the Calgary Flames for defenseman Rasmus Andersson.

Friedman isn't the first to reference this idea. Bob Stauffer, host of Oilers Now, also threw the idea of Andersson out there. While talking about possibly letting Philip Broberg go and when asked if anyone else was out there that was better at the same price point for Broberg, Stauffer mentioned Andersson.

Stauffer said that "right here, right now" Andersson is a better player than Broberg, and he plays the right side. He said, "Calgary sold everybody else off and traded everybody else away." He did concede, "I don't know if Calgary does Edmonton any favors here."

Friedman also wasn't so sure but for a different reason.

Friedman said in his podcast, "They have basically told all their guys, nothing is coming this summer." He added that last year was too noisy, that this year has been a lot quieter and they like it that way. The Flames want to see how things are going to play out before they consider any more major moves.

Could That Change from a Flames' Perspective?

Friedman said that anything can happen and that if you make Calgary an offer they can't refuse, they'll have to consider it. One of the producers on the Oilers Now show, Brenden Escott, threw the following idea out there:

"If the #Oilers decline to match Broberg’s offer sheet, would you trade 1st & 2nd round picks + Kulak or Ceci to Calgary for Rasmus Andersson? The soon-to-be 28-year-old has two years left at $4.55M."

Is this the kind of trade that would make the Flames stand up and reconsider their position to keep things quiet this offseason and not make any additional trades?
