Calgary gives a nod to the Stampeders hockey clubs of the 1950s and 1960s for Battle of Alberta clash

The Calgary Flames are honouring the Calgary Stampeders of the 1950s and 1960s with their sweaters for the Battle of Alberta Heritage Classic clash net month.

The white-based, red-striped uniform — with red pants — features the Flames logo constructed of layered felt surrounded by the words CALGARY FLAMES.

The Adidas design also features names and numbers in felt with stitching details to evoke denim-reinforced sewing seen on cowboy’s blue jeans.

The Oilers sweaters are a nod to the 1952 Edmonton Mercurys, who won gold for Canada at the 1952 Olympic Winter Games in Oslo, Norway.

Sweaters for both teams have the phrase “Battle of Alberta” on the collar.

The Flames and Oilers will clash at Commonwealth Stadium on Sunday, Oct. 29, nearly 20 years to the day of the first Heritage Classic affair in that same stadium.
