Calgary already has a collection of young players through the organization sidelined with long-term injuries

The hits keep on coming for the Calgary Flames throughout the organization.

While we await word on the injury suffered by forward Adam Ruzicka in Tuesday’s 3-1 loss to the New York Rangers, the Flames announced Wednesday morning top prospect defenseman Jeremie Poirier is out indefinitely after he suffered a skate laceration of his arm in the Calgary Wranglers’ AHL game in Abbotsford on Saturday.

Poirier, 21, will require surgery to repair the laceration.

Poirier, whose knee surgery after last season delayed him being a full participant at training camp, started the AHL season on fire, with one goal and seven points in the first four games. The Wranglers have a 3-0-1 record.

The second-round pick of the 2020 draft was named to the AHL’s all-rookie team after collecting nine goals and 41 points in 69 regular season games. He also netted two goals and eight points in nine playoff outings.

The Flames already are having a tough go on the injury front, with Jakob Pelletier — expected to be a full-time NHLer this season — and depth player Kevin Rooney both out indefinitely due to shoulder surgeries after pre-season injuries. As well, 2023 first-round draft choice Sam Honzek, who would be with the WHL Vancouver Giants if healthy, is on the shelf for at least another month due to a lower-body injury suffered late in the NHL pre-season.
