Samuel Honzek’s goal-scoring run came to a screeching halt at the world juniors.
So did Team Slovakia’s winning streak.
Honzek, the Calgary Flames 2023 first-round draft choice, was held without a point in Slovakia’s 10-2 thumping at the hand of Team U.S.A. in their round-robin finale Sunday morning at the tournament in Gothenburg, Sweden.
The clash was a showdown for top spot in the pool, and a 3-2 game late in the second period before the U.S. scored seven unanswered goals — five in the third period.
Honzek, Calgary’s lone prospect at the tournament, scored in each of the first three games for Slovakia, which finished second overall in Group B. Slovakia will play Finland, the third-place club in Group A, in the quarter-finals on Tuesday.
Honzek finished the round-robin with three goals and one assist.
