Endless turnovers.
Almost no scoring chances, let alone actually goals.
Worst of all, a seemingly disinterested performance in the Calgary Flames’ 3-0 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Thursday.
The Flames, save for goaltender Jacob Markstrom, deserved the chorus of boos they received from the few fans who remained as they left the Saddledome ice after a disappointing outing that leaves them riding a four-game losing skid — in which they’ve scored only four goals.
“I just want to apologize to our fans. We’re playing like shit right now," defenseman Nikita Zadorov said.
With coach Ryan Huska seemingly trying every possible forward combination possible, other than breaking up the one trio that actually is making something happening in Mikael Backlund, Blake Coleman and Andrew Mangiapane, the Flames fell to a new low, while Blues back-up goalie Joel Hofer recorded his first career shutout.
The Blues, a team that has little offense as well, controlled the play and took advantage of a Flames team that is struggling on nearly all fronts, with the worst offenders their highest paid forwards.
Nazem Kadri was guilty of an egregious giveaway that directly led to Kasperi Kapanen’s short-handed goal that opened the scoring. Meanwhile, Jonathan Huberdeau again achieved very little on a night he played 14:44, less than one minute more than he skated in the minus-4 performance in Detroit.
Up next is Sunday’s Heritage Classic against the equally floundering Edmonton Oilers. About the only good news is that one Alberta team will finally win a game.
