The Calgary Flames are on the lookout for a right-shot center, but a trade likely won’t happen anytime soon, according to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman. Calgary's search for a center has been stopped nearly dead in its tracks by a lack of available options on the trade market. At least, that's the impression being given by an opposing GM.
The Flames have been open about their desire to upgrade, but the need for a center became evident during a recent game against Seattle, where a disadvantage in the faceoff circle contributed to a tying goal. Friedman points out that since the departure of Elias Lindholm, the Flames are feeling the impact of not having a reliable right-handed faceoff specialist. But, as Nashville Predators' GM Barry Trotz explains, "no one is giving their centremen away."
Trotz is looking for the same thing and he's being shot down by every GM he's talked to.
The Flames are willing to pay for what they need. Still, it's too early in the season for rival clubs to be offloading valuable assets, especially at a position most teams are looking for.
Friedman noted that no significant moves are expected soon. Fortunately, that's not the end of the world for General Manager Craig Conroy as he's in no rush to make a deal. He wants the right fit, on the right term, and in the right trade, otherwise, he's going to wait.
Conroy told Sportsnet’s Eric Francis, “Sending a first-round pick for a guy who would be here for a year doesn’t make much sense. But if it was a first-round pick for a guy who would be here long term, we would be open to that.”
Rumors may continue to surround the Flames, who aren't shying away from talking about their desire to add. But, to expect anything is imminent or to get done in the next few weeks is unlikely. This type of move will have to wait. And, by then, it should be clear as to what Calgary really is.
Are they a flash in the pan off to a hot start that won't last? Or, are they for real?
