As we have discussed before, it has been a really quiet off-season for Calgary
A bit too quiet to be honest.
And if I can be frank, I can still remember when the Calgary-faithful were strongly behind the Flames in the spring as the players put every bit of their effort to push Calgary into the playoff picture, but alas some of the out of town results denied that from happening.
There have been many topics of discussion since then: Rasmus Andersson's situation, Connor Zary contract, potentially getting Dustin Wolf a new contract.
Heck, the Flames have talked about everything, except improving on the special teams.
Since the Four-Nations break, the Flames ranked 25th in the league in power play percentage.
Don't let the decent 15-6-6 record in that time fool you.
According to Natural Stat Trick, the Flames had 776 shots on their own net in all strengths, which was the 11th-most in the league, and they were able to survive thanks to Dustin Wolf who put up a 10-5-5 record in that span AND a save percentage of above .900.
The penalty kill is a different story. Even though they gave up one goal in their season finale against Los Angeles, since March 26, this team has gone a league-best 21-for-23 in that span.
So it seems like GM Craig Conroy has got some things working for him, but there are still some other things to work on that haven't been touched on yet. Unless that happens, you can expect a very slow development process in Southern Alberta.
