The Chicago Blackhawks aren't ready to compete for a playoff spot just yet and they are hoping more of their young guys can break in and play big roles. In the meantime, it isn't a bad idea to bring in players that can have an immediate impact and fit the mold of the team for the future. This is what seems to be on the mind of Kyle Davidson, the Blackhawks general manager.
All of the prospects that the Blackhawks have won't have a future with Chicago as there isn't enough room and some will be shipped out sooner or later. That could come in a deal this season. According to Evan Renaerts, sources say Yegor Chinakhov of the Columbus Blue Jackets has finalized trade demands and the Blackhawks are one of the teams that are in the talking stages.
This at least means the Blackhawks are showing interest in a young player that could fit the plans of what the team is trying to build. It also means that a prospect or even a veteran on top of that will probably go the other way, which is alright.
Chinakhov is 24 years old and has played parts of four seasons in the NHL now in a middle-6 role, but is going to see his role shrink on the Blue Jackets if he stays. He scored seven goals and 15 points in 30 games last season and had career highs of 16 goals and 29 points in 53 games the season prior. He has dealt with injuries, which I think has held him back a little and made him lose favour in Columbus compared to other players, new or old.
The Blackhawks easily have the cap space and assets to bring in Chinakhov and it appears as though it is a matter of time. A trade could come before the season or near the beginning, but I can see him in a second or third line role for Chicago. Maybe he would get some time beside Connor Bedard as well. It is a good thing the Blackhawks are showing interest in a player like this, and whether they get him or not, it should continue with other players around the league.
