Former Blue Jackets' Captain drops the gloves with Blues' Brayden Schenn

The stage was set: two teams playing hockey on an outdoor rink, just like so many of us did as kids.

The Chicago Blackhawks and St. Louis Blues faced off in the 2025 Winter Classic on New Year’s Eve, with the Blues coming out on top in a decisive 6-2 victory.

However, it wasn’t the goal scoring that captured the attention of NHL fans.

With just over two minutes left in the second period, Blackhawks captain Nick Foligno tried to fire up his teammates by dropping the gloves with Blues captain Brayden Schenn.

The two captains engaged in a spirited tilt lasting about 30 seconds, with the edge going to Foligno, who is known for his toughness.

As my colleague Lou Korac from The Hockey News Blues site reported, it was Schenn who asked Foligno to drop the gloves. He wanted the memory of fighting at the Winter Classic.
