This summer, Spencer Lazary and I will continue our series with more potential free agent targets that could be on the market on July 1st.

Today, we talk about 13-year vet Dmitry Orlov.

    Target: Dmitry Orlov - D - Age: 33 - 13 Years Experience

Orlov spent the first 11 years of his career with the Washington Capitals before being traded to the Minnesota Wild in February 2023. He was then flipped to the Boston Bruins, where he finished out the season. In the summer of 2023, he signed a free-agent deal with the Carolina Hurricanes.

    Stats

Orlov is coming off a season in which he played in 76 games. The defenseman scored 6 goals and 28 points and had a plus-16 rating. He averaged 20 minutes a game on the ice and had a single power-play point. Two of his six goals were game-winning goals.

Orlov has 101 games of playoff experience (so far) and has 41 total points.

    Previous Salary

Orlov signed a 2 year, $15,500,000 contract with a cap hit of $7,750,000 per season with Carolina in 2023. Cap experts predict his next contract to be in the range of a three-year, $5.8 million per season deal.

Realistic Chances Of A Signing: Warm

Who was the GM in Carolina when he signed with the Canes? You guessed it, Don Waddell. So I wouldn't count anything out just yet. Orlov is a very sturdy defenseman who simply does his job, and more importantly, is available. He's played in 82 games five times, and has played in 76 games twice.

He's not going to give you a ton of points or even play much on the power play, but he will give you veteran leadership and a hard-nosed attitude, and he plays defense.

It's no secret that Don Waddell wants to revamp his defense, and getting Orlov for a couple of years would be a good start. He's only 33 and has tons of experience, especially in the playoffs.

Orlov would be a good addition to the Columbus Blue Jackets
