This summer, Jason Newland and I will continue our series looking at potential free agent targets who could be available on July 1.
Today, we’re looking at Patrick Kane.
Target: Patrick Kane – RW – 18 Years Experience
Patrick Kane could be exactly what the Columbus Blue Jackets need. Another veteran who can score 45–55 points per season and could welcome a one-year deal.
If he doesn’t sign another deal with the Detroit Red Wings and hits the open market, could the Blue Jackets be a top suitor for him?
Let’s take a closer look.
Stats
Kane has scored a ton of points in his time in the NHL. Last season, he scored 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points. In years past, he has scored 106 points in 2015–16 and 110 in 2018–19.
In his 16-year career, he has scored 492 goals and 851 assists for 1,343 points in 1,302 games. The next team he plays for he will be celebrating his 500th career goal.
Previous Salary
Kane signed a one-year deal back on June 30, 2024, and now looks to be a pending unrestricted free agent. His deal paid him a $4 million AAV with a $2.5 million performance bonus.
Contract experts predict that he will make somewhere in the neighbourhood of $3.4 million and is expected to sign a one-year deal.

Realistic Chances of a Signing: Warm
Some may argue that Kane wouldn’t be a good fit for the Blue Jackets. But instead of going for someone who can take a spot for numerous seasons, the ideal candidate for Columbus would be to acquire talent who can step in and help, but not sign long-term deals unless they are premium talent.
For Kane, he would fit a role within the top six and mentor some of the young core like Adam Fantilli and Kent Johnson. Plus, if they can get him in and around where the contract experts predict, signing a future Hall-of-Famer like Kane to a one-year deal worth $3.5 million would be a near-perfect fit.
