This summer, Jason Newland and I will continue our series looking at potential free agent targets who could be available on July 1.
Today, we’re looking at Ryan Donato.
Target: Ryan Donato – C/RW – 8 Years Experience
Donato is a name that could land on a lot of teams' lists over the next few months. If he does leave the Chicago Blackhawks, it likely won’t be for long—he should draw plenty of interest on the open market. That said, it would still be a bit surprising if he walks away from the organization, especially after a breakout year. The Blackhawks are looking to take a step forward, and keeping a player like Donato helps them do just that.
Stats
As mentioned, Donato had a breakout season in 2024-25. He played in 80 games and finished with 31 goals and 31 assists for 62 points, setting new career highs across the board. He also doubled his previous best in points, which shows just how much of a jump he made.
In terms of playoff experience, he’s only been there three times. He’s appeared in 19 total postseason games, registering just two assists.
Previous Salary
Donato is finishing the final season of his two-year deal that carries an AAV of $2 million. He signed it back on July 1, 2023. Based on what contract experts are projecting, his next deal could be around two years with a $2.4 million AAV.
Realistic Chances of a Signing: Warm
Ahead of the March 7 trade deadline, there were rumors Donato might be moved. That didn’t happen, and he finished the year strong in Chicago. I think there’s a real shot he re-signs with the Blackhawks, especially considering the year he had. But if he does hit the open market, Blue Jackets GM Don Waddell should absolutely check in.
He’d be a great fit in Columbus. Donato could slot into their middle six and chip in 50–60 points, which is the kind of production that could push them over the playoff hump. Between building up the young core and adding established depth, this is exactly the kind of move the Blue Jackets need to consider.
