Few figures within the Detroit Red Wings organization have both witnessed as many great moments over the past several decades and possessed such a professor-like grasp of the club's history as former forward and longtime color commentator Mickey Redmond.

Redmond, who made franchise history in 1973 as the first Detroit player to score 50 goals in a single season, has been a staple of Red Wings television broadcasts as a color commentator since the mid-1980's.

During his time behind the microphone, he watched the entire Red Wings career of Hall of Famer Sergei Fedorov, who will appropriately be honored in the upcoming 2025-26 season by having his iconic No. 91 jersey retired and hung in the rafters at Little Caesars Arena.

Redmond made a special appearance Local 4 WDIV's televised sports segment with host Hobie Artigue to give his thoughts on the recent announcement on Fedorov's jersey retirement, and had no shortage of superlatives to describe his career in Detroit.

"During the halcyon years that Fedorov was a part of, it's amazing to look back at how it all started with him - clandestine, coming out of the Soviet Unition in 1989 after the Draft, and the journey after that has been unbelievable," Redmond said.

Fedorov's tenure with the Red Wings ended in less than amicable fashion in 2003 with his decision to bolt for the Anaheim Mighty Ducks, adding to what was already a bit of a controversial past with the infamous offer sheet in 1998 from the Carolina Hurricanes.

Thankfully, the relationship between Fedorov and the organization as well as the fans has been mended, and the announcement of his jersey retirement in the upcoming season has been met with overwhelming support.

"Very much deserved, I mean Sergei Fedorov to me was like a Kentucky Derby thoroughbred," Redmond said. "He could do it all.....I called him many times a thoroughbred, and he was certainly that as we called those games."

"He was multi-dimensional, an incredible, incredible hockey player," Redmond continued. "We're looking forward to Sergei coming back and being a part of this, and I know he's just gonna be upside down over this."

The Red Wings will retire Fedorov's number at Little Caesars Arena on January 12 prior to facing the Hurricanes.
