Two roster players and a 1st round pick could be attainable to acquire in a trade with Philip Broberg.

The Edmonton Oilers are in the market for a top-6 winger and a top-4 defenceman. David Pagnotta went to Twitter recently to proclaim that the Oilers have made Philip Broberg available "if the right circumstances present themselves, beyond trying to clear out some $."

Teams don't trade a potential top-4 defence prospect every day, so I imagine any move involving Broberg would need to be substantial. Ken Holland has gone on the record in media availabilities saying that any move involving a roster player needs to bring in an upgrade at that position. That being said, here are three assets I think would be a sufficient return for the young blue liner.

    2023 First Round Pick

The Oilers do not have a 1st round draft pick in the 2023 NHL Entry Draft. The one that they did possess went to the Nashville Predators as part of the Mattias Ekholm trade. Many scouts say that this draft is incredibly deep, so gaining a 1st round pick sounds like a smart maneuver.

Broberg has lost a bit of his shine as a "hot-young prospect" but should still carry value with many general managers as he can handle NHL minutes. Somewhere in the 12-32 pick range feels like an accurate representation of his value to other teams.

    Travis Konecny

In this scenario, Broberg would be part of a package that helps the Oilers acquire a dream top-6 forward, Travis Konecny. With 31 goals and 61 points in 60 games, Konecny broke out in a big way this year.

Other assets in a potential package would have to include one of Kailer Yamamoto or Warren Foegele. Complete the package with a 2024 1st round draft pick and that might be able to do the trick.

    Erik Karlsson

The San Jose Sharks defenceman Erik Karlsson is the front-runner to win the James Norris Trophy for Best Defenceman in the NHL. He recorded a ridiculous 101 points in 82 games featuring 25 goals. Say what you will about his defensive ability, but the prospect of this offensive dynamo on the back-end wrecking havoc on opposing teams with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl is too tantalizing to not try to make it a reality.

Broberg still has the time and the tools to become a top-4 two-way defenceman in the NHL. With the log-jam on the left side of the defence group, as well as a few holes in the roster, something of value needs to be moved to bring in new pieces. Unfortunately, Broberg may be one of those pieces.
