The Los Angeles Kings have almost all of their RFA's signed now after the team announced Jordan Spence has signed a two-year, $3 million deal.
This is yet another excellent value contract for the Kings this summer.
Spence joins Quinton Byfield as a player who's likely already exceeding the value of his contract and will likely greatly exceed it very soon.
If he beats Brandt Clarke for the RD2 spot, he'll be providing fantastic value as an RD2 and potential power play weapon at $1.5 million per year.
Unlike Byfield, Spence was given a short-term contract at just two years.
This means Spence will be an arbitration eligible RFA when this contract expires.
If he establishes himself as a top-four defenseman he can re-negotiate a new contract in two years but the Kings retain some cost control.
It's a win for both sides.
Spence's usage going forward will be fascinating. He was excellent in the playoffs last season and showed he can handle a more significant role.
However, he has both Clarke and Drew Doughty to contend with for ice time, and in the short-term he's really just competing with Clarke.
Still, it's stiff competition, what does a path to consistent top four and power play usage look like for Spence?
A move to the left side could help but LA has been reluctant to do so with Spence and don't view a Spence-Doughty or Spence-Clarke pairing as viable.
That's an issue for another day though, for now, the Kings get a bright young defenseman on an excellent contract.
