The Ontario Reign looked to put the Firebirds in the rearview mirror as they squared off with the Tucson Roadrunners Wednesday night in Ontario.
In the first, Tyler Madden made a nice pass out in front from his belly behind the net, and Francesco Pinelli finished the play with a backhand shot top shelf.
Ontario has had a thing for passes from their stomach, as Gawdin had a similar assist in the win vs Abbotsford last week.
Later, Jakub Dvorak misplayed a bouncing puck in the neutral zone, leading to a breakaway score for Hunter Drew, evening the game at one.
Overall, this year, a very sloppy period from the Reign in the opening period has been a trend for the team.
The middle frame saw one tally from Glenn Gawdin, who scored a one-timer out in front. Jeff Malott made a nice feed from behind the net, which led to the goal.
It was a much better period from the first, a lot cleaner, generating more opportunities to score.
Going into the final period, Ontario looked to close out the lead with a win, something they have had trouble doing this season.
Reilly Walsh opened the period scoring on the man advantage, making it 3-1 Ontario. This was desperately needed to boost their late-game confidence.
The game remained that way until the very end, topped off by a Gawdin empty-net goal, giving the Reign a 4-1 victory.
It was a much-needed bounce-back win for the Reign after getting swept by the Firebirds last weekend.
Here are two takeaways from this game
Oh My Gawdin
Glenn Gawdin earned himself the first star of the game Wednesday night, adding the cherry on top to a spectacular day.
Gawdin, acquired from the San Diego Gulls this offseason, has been everything as advertised so far for the Reign.
He leads the Reign in points with 11 in 11 games played, which includes four goals and seven assists.
After the game, Gawdin earned the Reign Train Conductor hat, which assistant captain Charles Hudon awarded to the player of the game.
Roadrunner Rage
There was much anticipation before the game that it would be a highly physical contest, but it was not on display for much of the game.
At the end of the game, though, the physicality broke through, as there was a borderline line brawl with 27 seconds left.
You can call it loser hockey, but the Roadrunners have had a philosophy for a while now: "If you can't beat them, fight them," and we saw that Wednesday night.
The Reign will head to Colorado for a two-game set against the Eagles this weekend. They hope to not repeat that of last weekend against the Firebirds.
