The Minnesota Wild placed defenseman Dakota Mermis on waivers Friday afternoon, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

Mermis, 29, has been with the Wild since the start of the season after recalling him from the Iowa Wild on Oct. 12 ahead of their season opener due to injuries.

The veteran left-shot defenseman has been a pleasant surprise this season. Mermis has two goals and five points with a -1 rating across 13 games, where he's averaged 15:42 of ice time. Mermis played a majority of his ice time alongside Jake Middleton (85:09), Jon Merrill (60:19) and Zach Bogosian (21:55).

Mermis also has 11 shots, 21 blocks and three minor penalties in those 13 contests. With Mermis on the ice, the Wild have controlled 48.23 percent of the Corsi share and 42.25 percent of the expected goal share at five-on-five, according to Natural Stat Trick.

If Mermis passes through waivers, the expectation is that he will be sent down to AHL Iowa, where he captains the Wild's American Hockey League affiliate.

Mermis scored five goals and 26 points in 63 games with a +9 rating last season on AHL Iowa's blue line in addition to two games with the Wild.
