Minnesota Wild rookie Liam Ohgren has had a lot of firsts this week.
His first recall came Wednesday. He made his NHL debut in Las Vegas Friday, where he made a strong first impression and held his own in his first NHL game. Ohgren earned praise in the process from Wild coach John Hynes — who was “impressed” with his performance.
On Saturday night, Ohgren drew his first penalty, scored his first NHL goal and recorded his first assist for a two-point performance in his second career game to help the Minnesota Wild win 6-2 over the San Jose Sharks inside SAP Center.
After earning his first NHL point with a secondary assist on Declan Chisholm’s first-period goal, Ohgren collected the rebound from a Jonas Brodin shot and beat Sharks goalie Mackenzie Blackwood on the backhand from the low slot with 5:37 remaining in the middle frame.
Ohgren, who also hit a post in the third period, once again didn’t look out of place and finished with a +2 rating in 12:59 of ice time. With Ohgren on the ice at five-on-five, the Wild controlled 63.64 percent of the Corsi share and 75.76 percent of the expected goal share, according to Natural Stat Trick.
Rookie goalie Jesper Wallstedt earned his second NHL win in his third career game Saturday with 27 saves against the Sharks after he made 24 stops for his first career NHL win and shutout in Chicago last Sunday.
