Canadiens: Sean Monahan and Mike Matheson Make Sentimental Donations to Gaudreau GoFundMe Campaign

When confirmed news came out yesterday of the sudden passing of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, the sports world stood still.

The two were struck and killed by a vehicle on Thursday night. The driver is suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol. He was charged with two counts of death by auto. Matthew was 29 and Johnny was 31.

In the wake of the news of the brothers' passing, a GoFundMe has been launched to raise money supporting Matthew’s wife Madeleine and their unborn child.

Many NHL players have taken to the site and donated sentimental amounts of money. Montreal Canadiens defenseman Mike Matheson donated $1,321 USD to the campaign. The poetics of this amount is that Johnny wore the number 13 while Matthew wore 21.

Matheson was teammates with Johnny and Matthew during their days in the NCAA, attending Boston College and playing for the Eagles program. The eldest Gaudreau attended BC from 2011 to 2014, while Matheson attended from 2012 to 2015 and the youngest Gaudreau from 2013 to 2017.

Former Calgary Flames teammate of Johnny’s Sean Monahan also donated $1,300. The two played with the Alberta franchise for nine seasons, growing closer over the years and becoming best friends, as Monahan has stated.

Players from inside and outside the Flames and Blue Jackets organizations have donated to the campaign, The funds have reached over $275,000 USD at the time of this posting. If you would like to donate, you can do so by following this link.
