On Monday, New York Islanders head coach Patrick Roy returns to Colorado for the first time since resigning as their head coach ahead of the 2016-17 season.

It will be a bittersweet moment for Avalanche fans, who watched Roy, as a player in the Mile High City, win two Stanley Cups in 1996 and 2001 before seeing him win the Jack Adams award for Coach of the Year in 2013-14. 

During the first period, Roy didn't receive a tribute video, but his retired No. 33 was shown on the big screen, leading to a round of applause and cheers. 

Here's what Roy said prior to puck drop about his time in Colorado. 

“If I go back to the past, I mean obviously, I wish I would have done things differently, and in the time, I think I didn't have enough respect for the position of coaching," Roy said on Monday morning. "I think I learned a lot from it, and I think it makes me the coach I am today. So, do I have regrets? No, because it makes me who I am today, and I think I'm in a much better place today than I was then. I have more respect for the position, more appreciation for being back in the League and working in the League.”
