Defenceman Donovan Sebrango got the ban for leaving the bench during an altercation on Monday night during a game in Belleville.

Belleville Senators defenceman Donovan Sebrango received a six-game AHL suspension on Wednesday for leaving the bench during an altercation on Monday night.

But he didn't exactly get his money's worth.

The incident happened in the dying moments of the game in Belleville, with the B-Sens leading the Utica Comets, 2-0. Utica defenceman Topias Vilen was sprinting out of the zone with the puck, and Belleville's Oskar Pettersson right on his tail.

At his blue line, right at the boards, Vilen put the brakes on, trying to cut back into his own zone. Pettersson had no chance to react and smoked him awkwardly into the boards. Belleville's Cole Reinhardt picked up the loose puck and scored on the empty net.

Utica wasn't happy with the hit or the lack of a call, and that led to a skirmish.

Right after the ensuing faceoff, Belleville's penalty minute leader, Hayden Hodgson, had a beef with Utica's Shane Bowers, a former Sens first-rounder. Hodgson wrestled him to the ice. But Utica defenseman Dmitry Osipov then took a 20-foot run at Hodgson to get him off Bowers and then they go into it.

Hodgson left the ice, throwing down his gloves like something had happened to him in the pile up. Sebrango, who played two games in Ottawa this season, then jumped on to the ice to go after Osipov.

Sebrango, who was also involved in the first melee, didn't get there in time as Osipov was shoved into the penalty box. So the Sens prospect took a six-gamer for nothing.

The American Hockey League’s Player Safety Committee today announced the suspensions in a Wednesday news release.:

Belleville Senators defenseman Donovan Sebrango has been suspended for six (6) games and Utica Comets defenseman Dmitry Osipov has been suspended for two (2) games following their actions in a game between the teams on Feb. 17.

Sebrango was suspended under the provisions of AHL Rule 70.10 for leaving the players’ bench during an altercation. He will miss Belleville’s games tonight (Feb. 19) at Utica; Friday (Feb. 21) at Rochester; Sunday (Feb. 23) and Monday (Feb. 24) at Cleveland; and Feb. 26 and Feb. 28 vs. Manitoba.
