The Pittsburgh Penguins are still looking for depth scoring and that's exactly what Tomas Tatar could bring.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have already made the biggest splash of the offseason, but new president and general manager Kyle Dubas might not be done.
It’s been reported that the Penguins have shown interest in free agent forward Tomas Tatar; whether it’s a tryout contract or full deal, Tatar would be another splash move for Dubas.
Fitting Tatar on the roster and under the salary cap wouldn’t be easy, but Dubas and head coach Mike Sullivan won’t be afraid to make harsh decisions when it comes to constructing the lineup this season.
For the Penguins, Tatar fills a specific role that they are still yet to nail down; Tatar is a six-time 20-goal scorer and would automatically bring a punch of offense to the Penguins’ depth.
Sure, Tatar could be an easy answer to fill the roster spot left open by Jake Guentzel, but he isn’t expected to miss much time.
When a fully-healthy Penguins’ roster hits the ice, Tatar could slot in as a second or third line winger.
The Penguins did a good job of rebuilding their forward depth, but none of the additions strike fear as scoring threats.
Tatar added to the third line in place of someone like Rem Pitlick or Jeff Carter (if Sullivan scratches him) would do wonders for offense.
During the 2022-23 season, Tatar recorded 20 goals and 48 points, more than any bottom-six forward was able to record in Pittsburgh.
Those numbers also outpace any of the new depths forwards added by Dubas this summer.
Tatar's addition would likely mean someone else loses a spot in the roster, but Dubas said he won't be afraid to utilize the waivers to complete the roster.
If he is serious about Tatar, then it'll only add to the multiple battles for roster positions that should take place at training camp.
