The New Year couldn't have come at a better time for the San Jose Sharks, who had one of their worst stretches of the season in December with a record of 2-10-1.

San Jose played one of its worst games of the season against the Philadelphia Flyers last night with a 4-0 loss. Head coach Ryan Warsofsky didn't mince words when discussing his team's effort.

"It's very disappointing. Just no desperation, and now you're seeing teams that are finding their identity in the league. Earlier on, I think we were probably catching teams by surprise," Warsofsky said. "Now teams are full go. We're into almost January. Every night, it's going to be a dog fight. We're going to get every team's best because they're fighting for playoff spots. They're fighting for spots in their division standings, wherever it might be. And we have to realize that."

Mario Ferraro said postgame that the Sharks didn't have the energy right from the start of the game.

"I don't think we brought it from the get-go. We were a little slow," Ferraro said. "We just looked behind for most of the night, and I think we just kind of took our foot off the gas a little bit, especially when they extended the lead."

The Sharks are still the fifth youngest team in the NHL, with an average age of 25.71. While they are still learning how to win the NHL, coach Warsofsky's message is they must start learning how to win more games now rather than in a few years.

Warsofsky said after the team's 6-3 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights that it doesn't know what it takes to win.

"We've got to learn from this. I think it's got to come in from that within the room," Warsofsky said. "We have to understand and learn what it takes to win and we don't know what it takes to win in this league."

Despite all the losses, the Sharks are still playing better than they did during the 23-24 season. On New Year's Eve last season, San Jose had a record of 9-25-3 compared to 11-23-6 this season.

Even the goal differential is better. San Jose's goal differential was -75 (75GF to 150GA) compared to -37 (105GF to 142 GA) this season.

They are competitive in most games and have led in six during their eight-game losing streak. However, the schedule does not favor a young San Jose team, as their next three games are against the Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils, and Golden Knights.

"We have good enough players in there to win hockey games. Every team's going through injuries. We're no different. So we got to find ways to win hockey games...

"We've got to keep working on finding different solutions and finding the answers. We've tried some things throughout the season to keep getting that desperation and understanding the competitiveness that you need to play with. As you guys have seen, we've done it at times, but we're in a little bit of a lull right now, for whatever reason, and I gotta figure it out," Warsofsky said.

The Sharks held an optional practice today. Alexandar Georgiev was the only player to participate in the skate that played the night before.
