The Tampa Bay Lightning have selected Ethan Gauthier with the 37th overall pick. Gauthier, is a 6-foot, 183-pound right winger from the QMJHL's Sherbrooke Phoenix.
This pick comes after the Lightning acquired an early second-round pick, 37th overall, from the Colorado Avalanche on Wednesday, in exchange for forward Ross Colton. They weren’t previously set to pick in until the sixth and seventh round.
In his second QMJHL season in 2022-23, Gauthier scored 30 goals and added 39 assists for 69 points in 66 games. He went on to add 11 points in as many playoff games.
Gauthier is the son of former NHL defenseman Denis Gauthier, who skated in 554 career NHL games between Calgary, Phoenix, Philadelphia, and Los Angeles.
"Watching his videos - even when I was younger - I always wanted to use that physicality like he did," Gauthier said of his father.
"I've always been associated with my dad and in a way, I've always wanted to go out and do my own thing. Mark my own path. But if there was one thing I wanted to take from his (playing days), it's that.
"Honestly, it's pretty cool that I could pick that up from him."
Gauthier was ranked 16th among all North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting's final rankings.
