The Lightning are reportedly in the mix for this Penguins defenseman.
The Tampa Bay Lightning are expected to add to their roster before the 2025 NHL trade deadline passes. One specific area they could look to improve is their defensive depth, especially with their injury trouble this season.
It appears that the Lightning have an interesting blueliner on their radar. According to The Fourth Period, the Bolts are among the teams linked to Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Matt Grzelcyk.
Grzelcyk, 31, has created chatter as a potential trade candidate, and it is easy to understand why. The Penguins are currently among the bottom teams in the Eastern Conference, and Grzelcyk is a pending unrestricted free agent. Thus, he could be dealt before the March 7 deadline.

Grzelcyk is quietly having a strong offensive season for the Penguins. He has already set a new career-high with 27 points in 56 games this season. This is after he had two goals and 11 points in 63 games with the Boston Bruins in 2023-24.
If the Lightning acquired Grzelcyk, he could be a solid fit on their bottom pairing and give them another option for their second power-play unit. In addition, he would provide the Bolts with another player with plenty of post-season experience.
Overall, with the Lightning needing help on their blueline, Grzelcyk could be a decent veteran for them to take a chance on.
