There's an old saying that "so-and-so walked, so so-and-so could run".
It so goes with the Salt Lake Golden Eagles, who were the original professional hockey team in Utah.
While the name Eagles didn't make it into the final list chosen by the Smiths for the fan vote, many around the state are wondering how the team should integrate and honor that history.
The Golden Eagles were a serial championship-winning team in the minor leagues until 1994, when the team moved to Detroit, according to one article published by FOX13 Now in Utah.
Some did clamor for the name to be included in the final list, as written here.
Even if the name didn't make it, though, there still yet might be a chance to honor that history in branding.
The Golden Eagles "were proof that hockey would work in Utah", according to team historian Dave Sutter in his interview with FOX13.
It has continued ever since with the success of the ECHL's Utah Grizzlies, which, to me, anyway, are prime candidates to become at least one of Utah's new minor league affiliates.
(They literally play right down the road in West Valley, so why not?)
And further proof was shown in the amazing support given to the team when they arrived just a month ago at Delta Center for the first fan forum.
If you ask me, incorporating that history of the Golden Eagles, whether through color, logo styles, or even just general branding, would be perfect to connect with the community.
Just don't make it highlighter yellow and black.
