In the first goal of the day, Olli Määttä assisted on a Henri Jokiharju goal in Finland's first game against the United States
It didn't take long for an Utah Hockey Club player to make a mark on the game.
A 3-on-2 rush, led by Määttä, set up defenseman and linemate Henri Jokiharju—who replaced an injured Miro Heiskanen ahead of the game—for Finland's first goal of the night.
With Finland retaining the puck off the boards, both defenseman were off to the races quick. Ultimately, it would be Jokiharju who retain the puck and shoot right before USA could close in on him.
Jokiharju's shot went right under Connor Hellebuyck's armpit, giving Finland the first goal of the night. Prior to tonight, Jokiharju had scored only one goal on the season for the Sabres. Meanwhile, this would be Määttä's 11th assist.
Along with Määttä, Mikael Granlund of the Dallas Stars assisted on the play.
The USA quickly responded with a goal of its own from Senators forward Brady Tkachuk, who is representing the US.
Soon after that, the United States would score six unanswered goals in a 6-1 over Finland with four of those goals came in the third period.
While Finland kept it close for two periods, it simply couldn't keep up with the United States after it managed to score two goals within 11 seconds of each other.
With Juuso Välimäki being a healthy scratch, Määttä will be the only Utah HC player available to participate in the game, barring any injuries that might force Välimäki to check in.
But for now, it will be unlikely for Välimäki to play in this game. Barring any lineup changes from coach Antti Pennanen, Välimäki will likely stay as a reserve for the rest of 4 Nation Face-Off games.
