After weeks of rumours, the Vancouver Canucks have traded J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers. Miller was traded alongside Erik Brännström and prospect Jackson Dorrington in exchange for center Filip Chytil, defenceman Victor Mancini and a conditional first-round draft pick. Another significant part of this deal is that the Canucks will not be retaining any salary, meaning the Rangers take on Miller's full $8 million cap hit for the next five and a half seasons.

Over his 404-game career with Vancouver, Miller scored 152 goals and recorded 437 points. He ranks in the top 20 in goals, assists, and points in franchise history and was part of the leadership group for the last four seasons. Miller also recorded 30 points in 30 playoff games, helping the Canucks make it to the second round in 2020 and 2024.

As for the other two pieces leaving the organization, Dorrington is a left-shot defenceman who the Canucks drafted in the sixth round of the 2022 NHL Entry Draft. He is currently playing for Northeastern University at the NCAA level. In the case of Brännström, he never found a regular spot in Vancouver's lineup and has spent the past few weeks in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks.

The biggest piece coming back to Vancouver is Chytil. The 25-year-old center has 164 points in 378 career regular-season games. Chytil projects as a middle-six center but will most likely see time as the Canucks second-line center. Chytil is a restricted free agent after the 2026-27 season and shares an agent with Elias Pettersson, Quinn Hughes and Tyler Myers.

As for Mancini, he is a 22-year-old, 6'3", 229lbs right-shot defenceman. Mancini has played 15 NHL games this season, recording five points and 20 blocks while averaging 15:05. Mancini has some connections to the organization as he was teammates with prospect Ty Mueller at the University of Nebraska-Omaha and is a restricted free agent after the 2025-26 season.

Lastly, Vancouver also receives a conditional 2025 first-round pick. The condition of the pick is if it falls in the top-13 this year, the Canucks get the Rangers first-round pick in 2026. If the pick rolls over to 2026, it will be unprotected.

Vancouver and New York play one more time this season, with the game scheduled for March 22 at Madison Square Garden. Miller will also have a chance to face off against some of his teammates at the 4 Nations Face-Off, which is scheduled for mid-February. Game time for the March 22nd game is 10:00 am PT.
