That kind of offensive exploit hasn't happened often in the 2000s

How rare was the Vancouver Canucks offensive onslaught in Wednesday's season opener against Edmonton? Well, in 1732 regular season games since the start of the 2000-01 National Hockey League season, last night was just the eighth time the franchise has scored (at least) eight goals in a game.

The Canucks scored nine against the Boston Bruins on February 2, 2020 in one of the team's final home games before COVID first struck. That's the franchise's high-water mark for offense in a game in the 2000s.

Wednesday's season opener at Rogers Arena was the seventh time the Canucks have finished with eight in a game since the year 2000. Interestingly enough, the Canucks also exploded for eight in their 2019 home opener against the Los Angeles Kings.

Canucks games with 8 or more goals since start of 2000-01 NHL season

The Canucks scored eight once last season in an 8-5 home ice win over Anaheim. Andrei Kuzmenko recorded his first NHL hattrick that night while Elias Pettersson had the first of his three five-point nights last season.

The Canucks franchise record for goals in a game is 11 which has occurred three times. They walloped the California Golden Seals 11-5 in 1971. They beat Los Angeles by that same 11-5 score in 1986. And they shutout Calgary 11-0 in 1992. All three of those games took place at Pacific Coliseum. That lopsided win against the Flames is the last time a Canucks team hit double-digits in an NHL game.

The Canucks have never scored 10 goals in a game at Rogers Arena.
