ARLINGTON, V.A. — The Washington Capitals brought a familiar face back up to the District with Tom Wilson facing a likely lengthy suspension, as they've recalled Matthew Phillips from the AHL's Hershey Bears to help fill the void.
Phillips is on the ice for the team's morning skate ahead of Friday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes and is likely to suit up with Wilson's hearing for high-sticking Noah Gregor taking place in the afternoon.
The 26-year-old has had an interesting road in his first year with the Capitals, as he cracked the opening night roster and scored his first NHL goal before being subject to a number of healthy scratches. He was ultimately waived to make space for healthy returning players and was claimed by the Pittsburgh Penguins, but after a short stint there, he was waived again and re-claimed by D.C., who assigned him to the Bears.
In four games with Hershey, Phillips has one goal and two assists for three points. His last game with Washington was on Feb. 8 against the Florida Panthers.
