Rob Gray — USA TODAY Sports - Ovechkin's Lower Leg Injury Not Season-Ending, Carbery Says, But He Will 'Be Out For A Little Bit'

The Washington Capitals got an important update on Alex Ovechkin from head coach Spencer Carbery on Wednesday morning, and though it was confirmed he'll miss time, it won't end his historic season.

Carbery went on The Sports Junkies to share the latest on the 39-year-old, who was hurt in a knee-on-knee collision with Jack McBain back on Monday in the team's win over Utah Hockey Club.

"He's going to be out for a little bit," Carbery said, adding, "I think week-to-week is pretty accurate... this isn't something where his season is ending."

Ovechkin's injury is listed as a "lower leg" injury. Carbery added that there will be an update on Ovechkin later in the day after they meet with team doctors and he undergoes further evaluation.

The bench boss also gave his take on the play, saying that he didn't think McBain intended to hurt Ovechkin.

"It was an unfortunate collision. I watched it a bunch…you’re looking for if there was any purposeful contact there from McBain from Utah. I don’t know, I just think he gets a little bit out of control, his skating," Carbery said, adding, "He was a little bit reckless there but I don’t think anything, when I watched it back, was purposeful.”

Being without Ovechkin will be a challenge for the Eastern Conference-leading Capitals, as he leads the league in goals (15) and is off to one of the best starts of his career as he chases down Wayne Gretzky's record.

However, a week-to-week timeline is more promising that he will be back sooner rather than later.
